Chapter 10: The Accusation

The Beta was the first to move.

He did not move toward his son.

He turned and pointed across the hall at the door where Ezra stood.

"Black Fork," he said.

The word cracked off the stone.

"Black Fork did this. They had him in their hands before dawn. Two hours they held him. Alpha Duncannon, you poisoned my boy."

Every head turned.

I felt Clover stiffen at my shoulder.

Ezra stepped through the doorway and walked down the aisle slowly, with the dozen Black Fork wolves behind him.

His face showed nothing.

"Alpha Penhallow," he said. "I carried your son to your gate and left him at it."

"So you say."

"So the healer will say, when you ask her how long the poison has been in him."

"My son was well until yesterday," the Beta said. "He was strong. You came to our school, you took the girl, you put a spell on my family..."

"A spell," Ezra said.

"I will have your Black Fork council before the Moon Court..."

"Alpha Penhallow."

I had not planned to speak.

I heard my voice come out clear and loud, and the Beta stopped.

"Ask the healer how old the wolfsbane is," I said.

The Beta turned.

The healer stood by the pallet with the vial in both hands, her face gray.

"Well?" he demanded.

"It is old," she whispered. "Not hours. Not days."

"How old?"

"Wolfsbane that has soaked this long lines the blood and the bone marrow. This took months. A year, perhaps two."

The hall stirred.

"Black Fork did not have your son for a year," I said. "They had him for two hours, and they never gave him a drop of anything. They left him on your road in a blanket."

The Beta's mouth worked.
