Chapter 23: Both Packs

Imogen's POV

The moon came up over the river road, white and heavy, and every wolf of two packs stood to watch it.

Moon Hall had no roof tonight.

The elders had drawn back the big wooden shutters, and the light fell in a wide pool on the stone floor.

I walked into it with my hair loose.

I had not worn it down in front of Redwood in fifteen years.

My father had always said to pin it back, so the pack would not look.

Let them look.

Ezra came with me.

He wore the same plain black jacket he had worn in the lot, and the mark was visible above his collar, pink and fresh.

Mine showed above the neck of my sweater.

Nobody missed it.

The Seer waited at the center of the pool of light with her staff in both hands.

"Imogen Harwick," she said. "The Moon gave you a second scent. Will you answer it?"

"I will," I said. "But I'll say one thing first."

The Seer inclined her head.

"I'm not Harwick," I said.

A hush ran around the stone.

"My mother was a Merrow, and she was a healer, and she walked into this territory with a bag and no money. My father wrote her out of your book because he was ashamed of her. I'm not ashamed. I'm proud of every black hair on my head."

I looked at the old healer.

She stood at the front, white-haired, with her bag clutched in front of her.

She was crying.

"Seer," I said. "I want her name put back."

"It is already done," the Seer said.

She nodded to an elder, who stepped forward carrying a heavy book bound in black leather.

He opened it on a lectern in the light.

A page had been cut out and replaced.
