Chapter 14: Through the Bars
I sat down on my side of the gate, the way I always had.
Back to the bars. Knees up. The iron cold through my borrowed dress.
His shoulders were six inches from mine, with the bars between.
"Where's the warden?" I said.
"Asleep in his truck at the bottom of the road. Snoring like a chainsaw." I heard the smile in it. "He sleeps by ten. Always has. I used to clock it from the trees."
"Of course you did."
"Knock knock."
"Beck, I swear to God."
"Knock knock, Jo."
I put my head back against the iron and closed my eyes.
"Who's there."
"Lettuce."
"Lettuce who."
"Lettuce out of here. It's freezing."
I laughed so hard the twins' lantern swung in the dark behind me.
It was the worst joke he'd ever told.
It was the best thing I'd heard all day.
"How's Tobin?" I said, when I could talk.
His voice went careful.
"Ansel locked him in his room after the party. Took his phone." A pause. "He climbed out the window anyway. He came up to the cabin at eleven and made me promise I'd come here tonight."
"He climbed out a third-floor window?"
