Chapter 18: The Wedding
"I'll be there," I said.
Delaney's smile slipped, just a hair.
She'd expected me to run.
Everyone always expected me to run.
The wedding moon came up white and full over the larches nineteen days later.
I walked up the Larch Ridge road in jeans and my work boots and my mother's green scarf.
No dress this time.
Keir walked beside me as far as the hall's gate, and then he stopped, because I'd asked him to.
His pack stood in the road behind him, eighty wolves in their skins.
Lorne stood next to Gran with his healed pink hands in his hoodie pocket.
"Alone," Keir said.
"Alone."
"I hate this."
"I know." I touched his chest once. "Count to two hundred, then send your Beta in."
"Go on, honey," Gran said. "Ruin it."
The big doors of the hall were open for the moon, the same as the night of the Choosing.
I could hear Conrad's voice inside, warm and rolling, the voice he used for weddings and funerals.
I walked in.
The hall was fuller than I'd ever seen it.
Two hundred Larch Ridge wolves on the benches.
