Chapter 23: Lumber
I got dressed before I went out.
Keir didn't bother with a shirt.
He leaned on the porch post with my mark red on his neck, where every Brodie would see it first.
The truck stopped at the foot of the path.
The second son got out and shut the door very quietly.
"Morning," he said.
"What is this?"
"Lumber."
"I can see it's lumber."
He looked at the half-burned house behind me, the black beams, the open sky where the loft had been.
"Roof joists, wall studs, sheathing, a new ladder," he said. "We measured the old one off the photo in Lorne's phone."
The twins climbed down off the load.
Lorne tumbled out of the cab.
Beckett stopped at the edge of the yard, behind them all, and didn't come any closer.
"Who paid for it?" I said.
The second son glanced back at Beckett.
"He sold his truck," the bigger twin said. "To the lumberyard owner, at six this morning."
I looked at Beckett.
He didn't look away, but he didn't say anything either.
