Chapter 11: Live

We were in the Channel Four lobby forty minutes later, still wearing yesterday's clothes.

Hattie drove, and she ran two red lights.

The receptionist asked if we had an appointment.

"I'm the missing fiancée," I said. "I'd like to be found."

She looked at the television mounted over her desk, then at me, and picked up the phone.

They put us in the studio during a commercial break.

Tobias was already on the couch, with the handkerchief and the navy suit.

When he saw me his face went white.

"What is she doing here?" he said.

The anchor, a silver-haired woman with a pleasant face, glanced at the producer in the glass booth.

The producer nodded.

"We're back in ten," a voice called.

I sat down in the empty chair beside the anchor.

Conway stood just behind the camera with his hands in his pockets.

"Annalise!" Tobias said, with a wobble of the lip. "Thank God. Everyone, this is my fiancée."

"I'm not your fiancée," I said.

The red light came on.

"Welcome back," the anchor said smoothly. "We're joined now by Annalise Somerville, who has been the subject of a good deal of concern this morning. Ms. Somerville, are you being held against your will?"

"No."

"Mr. Harcourt says you've suffered a breakdown."

"Mr. Harcourt told me thirty minutes before my wedding that it was a joke," I said. "His friends filmed me while he laughed. Then they posted a video of me sobbing, with a voice they put in my mouth."

"That's not true," Tobias started.

"Please let her finish," the anchor said.

"Then I married a man I've known since I was nine," I said. "He's standing right there. His name is Conway Redfern. He owns the boatyard on the north shore, and he has never raised a hand to anyone."
