Chapter 17: The Marshal's Camp

Garreth's POV

I walked into the Marshal's camp at midnight with a white cloth tied to my sword arm and nobody's order in my head.

It was an odd way to travel.

Every few steps I waited for the pull and it did not come.

Marlis had argued against it for an hour in the Greyfen smithy.

"You can't go alone," she said.

"Nobody in that camp can give me an order."

"They can break your ribs."

"They can try." I took her hands, which were black to the wrist from the cold forge. "Your father is in a cage and two thousand wolves are coming. You hold the valley. Brigid needs you at the pack hall by morning. I need to see what we're facing."

"And if you don't come back?"

"I'll come back."

She kissed me hard, and then she let me go.

That was the part I kept turning over as I walked.

I had a place I wanted to return to.

The thought was so strange that I almost stopped in the road.

The camp lay at the Beechmoor crossing, eight miles north of Greyfen, a sprawl of tents and picket lines and cook fires.

The Collars at the outer ring knew me at once.

Five of them crowded around me with drawn knives and uneasy eyes.

"Commander Stane," said one. "Where's your wolf?"
