Chapter 20: The Parley

They carried the King down the meadow at dawn on a litter, under a white cloth, and set him in the frost.

I walked out to meet him with Garreth on my left and Brigid on my right.

Behind us, a hundred and forty wolves stood in a thin line on the grass with their shields up.

Behind them, the Stone stood in the mist.

In front of us stood the Host.

I had never seen so many wolves in one place.

They covered the south slope in black and grey ranks that ran back farther than I could see, silent and rigid, with their spears grounded.

Not a single one of them looked at me.

Their eyes were fixed on a point in the air in front of them.

Lord Marshal Skell stood beside the litter in his black coat, with twelve Collars at his back.

"Marlis," he said, warmly. "Good morning. You look well. You look so very like her."

I stopped ten paces away.
