Chapter 10: Haven

Esteban laughed.

It wasn't a real laugh.

It was the short one he used on reporters.

"Curtis," he said. "Curtis is admin on every system we've installed since we were two guys in a garage. That's not suspicious. That's his job."

"Then his job is watching your hallway at ten-forty at night."

"How would you even know that?"

"The log's on the tablet. Anybody with a household login can read it." I held up my phone. "I took a picture."

He took the phone and stared at it.

A muscle jumped in his jaw.

"Come to the office tomorrow," he said. "Ten o'clock. I'll have the engineers pull the export record, and we'll end this."

Jocelyn reached over and squeezed my wrist.

"I'm coming too," she said.

"You have chemo."

"Then I'm coming in spirit. Mari, wear something scary."

Haven Systems took up the whole third floor of a glass building in Sorrento Valley.

The walls were glass.

The conference rooms were glass.

Esteban's office was glass on three sides, and every desk on the floor could see into it.

I wore my one black blazer.

Esteban was at his desk with a laptop and two engineers in hoodies standing behind him.

Curtis was on the leather couch in the corner, ankles crossed, eating almonds out of his palm.

"There she is," he said. "Nancy Drew."

I didn't answer him.

"Show her," Esteban said.

One of the engineers turned the laptop toward me.

"The clip was exported from the server on December 4 at 3:12 a.m.," she said. "With admin-level tools. Admin exports don't record a username. It's a known gap."

"How many people have admin on my house?" I said.
