Chapter 22: High Water

By midnight the rain was so loud on the roof that we had to raise our voices in the kitchen.

Babi walked the kitchen floor with a kettle in each hand.

I walked it after her, holding the table, and stopped every four minutes to hold the back of a chair.

"It's too early," I said. "She's got two weeks."

"She has a mind of her own," said my grandmother. "She gets it from your mother."

At one o'clock the phone rang, and it was Rudy.

He had been the Chair for three months, and his voice had steadied.

"Cedar Bottom's under four feet," he said. "Highway 77 is closed at the bridge."

"And the ambulance?"

"It's on the other side of the Lavaca, and it can't cross until the water drops," Rudy said. "Noon, they say."

"Rudy, she's not going to wait until noon."

"I know," he said. "I've called the bread women. Every one of them who can drive is coming."

They came in ones and twos in the dark, in rubber boots and rain slickers, with towels under their arms and handkerchiefs up their sleeves.

By two there were five of them in Babi's kitchen.

The heavy woman in the flowered apron took off her slicker and rolled up her sleeves.
