Chapter 22: Notice

On Monday morning I drove to the city and put a letter on the managing partner's desk.

It was one paragraph.

I had worked there for two years and I was good at it.

I had never once looked forward to a Monday.

He read it standing up, with his coffee in his other hand.

"Two weeks' notice," he said. "Callie, you're my best paralegal."

"I know."

"Is it money? I can talk to the committee."

"It's not money."

"Is it a man?"

I thought about it.

"It's four," I said.

He looked at me for a long moment, then picked up his pen and signed the form.

"I don't want to know," he said. "Good luck. Take your things, finish the handoff by email."

I packed my desk into a box in ten minutes and carried it to the elevator, feeling light.

The lobby was cool and marble, with a security desk and a fern.

Four men stood in the middle of it in a row.

They were not hard to find.

Dean wore a clean shirt, which he had never done on a weekday.

Finley held a paper cup of coffee in each hand.

Gabe was bouncing a little on his heels.

Drake stood at the end, with a small silver key in his palm.

I stopped in front of them with the box in my arms.
