Chapter 13: Ask Him How Long He Knew

Colby stood at the triage desk in his navy overcoat, with one hand resting easy on the counter.

The man in the suit beside him held a leather folder.

Bridget stood on the other side of the desk in her scrubs, with her arms crossed and her chin up.

Two nurses and a security guard watched from the far end of the lobby, and nobody was breathing loudly.

Nathaniel and I came through the sliding doors at a walk.

"There she is," Colby said, and smiled at me. "And my brother, who shouldn't be allowed on hospital property."

"Get away from my friend," I said.

"I'm here to help your friend." He tapped the folder. "Ms. Finch is holding stolen private material. My lawyers have written to her employer."

"It's a video of you in my bed," I said.

"It's a doctored file," Colby said, loud enough for the guard. "And Ms. Finch has a copy on a flash drive."

Bridget didn't blink.

"Come and take it," she said.

"Hand it over, and the letter goes in the trash. Keep it, and you're suspended by noon."

Bridget looked at me.

I shook my head.

"No," Bridget told him. "And you can tell the hospital whatever you like. I've worked here nine years."

Colby sighed, in no hurry at all.

He turned to Nathaniel.

"Tell her, Nate."

Nathaniel went still.

"Tell her how long you've known."

"Colby," Nathaniel said quietly.

"He's had a man following me since the spring," Colby said to me. "Four months. Photographs of me and Bethany, in hotel lobbies, in her car."

My mouth had gone dry.

"He knew before you did, Em. He knew what was in your bed, and he never once picked up a phone."

The lobby was very quiet.

I looked at my husband.

"Is that true?" I asked.

Nathaniel looked back at me and did not look away.
