Chapter 18: Bethany Stands Up

"This crest," the gray man said.

He tapped the top of the page.

"The hospital changed its crest two years ago. I sat on the committee that picked it."

Gerald didn't move.

"It's a reprint," his lawyer said at once. "A certified copy made recently, from the original."

"A certified copy would say so."

"It's a clerical detail."

"It's a letter dated four years ago," the gray man said, "on paper that did not exist until the year before last."

The board members looked at each other.

I had not opened my mouth, because I'd promised to sit in silence.

I opened it now.

"I clean old paper for a living," I said. "That sheet has a modern brightener in it. It would glow under a lamp, and a four-year-old letter wouldn't."

"Mrs. Lathrop," Gerald said coldly.

"I can have it under a lamp in an hour."

Nobody looked at the lawyer, and he didn't look at anyone.

Gerald's hand was flat on the blotter next to his watch.

"This is a distraction," he said. "The doctor will confirm it by telephone."

"The doctor you paid," Nathaniel said.

"The doctor you slandered."

The door opened.

Bethany stood on the threshold in a gray coat, with Bridget a step behind her in her scrubs.

Her face was bare and her chin was up, and she held her phone tight in one hand.

"I'm sorry," she said to the room. "I wasn't invited."

"Ms. Quill," Gerald's lawyer said. "This is a closed session."

"Then close it behind me."

She walked the length of the room, and nobody stopped her.

She stopped beside Colby's chair, and then she saw that it was empty.

I looked too.

The chair was pushed back from the table, and the coffee in front of it was still steaming.
