Chapter 22: The Second Page

Nathaniel didn't take the pen.

He looked at it in my hand for a long time, and then he looked at me.

"Sit down, Imogen," he said.

"I'd rather stand."

"Then stand. But read this first."

He crossed to the long table and opened the bottom drawer of the cabinet beside it.

He took out a single sheet in a folder, and I knew it before he laid it down.

It was the second page.

The one he had signed in front of me at midnight, and called his, not mine.

"I told you to read every page," Nathaniel said. "I broke that rule on the first night. Read this one now."

I picked it up.

It was one paragraph, in plain legal type, with a date at the top.

The date was the night I'd signed.

I, Nathaniel Lathrop, waive all right to end this marriage for any reason.

I read that line three times.

Mrs. Imogen Ward Lathrop may end it on any day, by her signature alone.

On the date of marriage, one half of every share and asset I own passes to her, and cannot be taken back.

My name was not on the bottom of the page.

Only his was, in black pen, and a notary's stamp beside it.

"This isn't possible," I said.

"It's signed."

"You can't give away half of your shares. The vote."

"I signed it before we ever stood in front of a judge, and I made it a contract so no lawyer of my father's could say I'd been tricked." His mouth moved. "I knew he'd look for the loophole. I wanted there to be none."

"Half of everything," I said.

"Yes."

"On the first night."

"Yes."

My legs stopped holding me, and I sat down on the arm of the sofa.

"The other contract said I could leave before the dinner," I said. "I thought that was the only door."
