Chapter 29: Her Half

The boardroom at nine was the same long walnut table where Gerald had been voted out.

Nathaniel took the chair at the head of it.

I did not sit beside him.

I sat in the empty seat at the foot of the table, because the vice chairman had asked, with great courtesy, that "the interested party" be present.

Seven directors sat between us, and one of them smiled at me.

"Thank you for coming, Mrs. Lathrop," said the vice chairman.

He was a heavy man with a pink face, and he had sat at Gerald's elbow for twenty years.

"Item four," he said. "The company has learned that the marriage of our chairman was a contractual arrangement. One year, public appearances only."

He pushed a thick folder down the table.

"We have a copy of the agreement. Mr. Gerald Lathrop's counsel had one made at the time of signing."

"You mean a copy was stolen," I said.

"Provided."

"From the penthouse."

"The source is not at issue."

"It's at issue to me," I said. "I live there."

A few directors shifted.

"The motion is simple," he said. "A marriage entered into to move shares is no marriage. The transfer of half of the chairman's holdings to Mrs. Lathrop should be void, and returned to the board's control."

"Whose control?"

"The board's, naturally."

"Gerald's," I said, "with his proxy. You're asking us to give his shares back to the man in jail."

The pink color deepened.

"Mr. Gerald Lathrop has resigned his seat."

"And named you his proxy yesterday, from the county jail."

Nobody spoke.

Nathaniel's lawyer had found the filing at midnight, and I had kept it back until now.

The vice chairman cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Lathrop. Did you or did you not sign a paper that said your marriage was a business arrangement?"
