Chapter 7: The Head of the Table

On Monday I was in the Meridian lobby at eight, forty minutes early, with a coffee I couldn't drink.

Regan met me at the elevators and handed me a badge with my name already printed on it.

"Maddie Stanwood, Events Manager," she read off it. "Look at that. You're real."

"I'm terrified."

"Good. Terrified people check the fire exits." She swiped us up to thirty-two. "All-hands is at nine. You'll sit with the department heads, and nobody will ask about the video, because I told them I'd fire the first one who did."

"Can you do that?"

"I'm the COO. I can fire anyone but my brother."

Two women from accounting got in on twenty and looked at my badge.

They waited until the doors closed to lean toward each other.

"Is that her?"

"It's her. Regan hired her. Of course she did."

"At least she knows the rule."

"What rule?" I said.

They both jumped.

Regan smiled at the ceiling. "Oh, the staff rule. My brother wrote it his first week as CEO. No relationships with anyone who works for us, ever. Top to bottom."

"Because of the tabloids?" the second woman said. "Because of the, you know. Different girl every week?"
