Chapter 11: Everything in Her Hands

By morning Harvey had put everything he owned in my hands.

His phone.

His laptop password.

The login for every bank account he had, written on a sheet of hotel notepaper in his neat engineer's print.

"I'm not going to do anything you don't know about," he said.

I looked at the sheet.

"That's the least sane thing I've ever seen a CEO do."

"I know."

"Don't do it again."

"All right."

He had not slept.

He had also not argued with a single thing I said, which was starting to scare me.

"Text Daphne," I said. "Tell her you're a wreck and you need a friend. Tell her to come over tonight."

His face twisted.

"I can't make myself"

"You can. You owe me."

He typed it.

Daphne answered right away.

On my way. Don't do anything stupid, darling.

At seven that evening I was standing inside the narrow study with the door open one inch and my phone recording in my fist.

The painting had been put back on its hook, with the torn backing taped over.

I stood under it.

Through the crack I could see the living room and the sofa and Harvey sitting at one end of it, hollow-eyed, with a glass of whiskey he wasn't drinking.

The elevator chimed.

Daphne came in wearing black, with a leather tote bag over her arm.

She looked like a woman arriving at a funeral she had planned.

"Oh, Harvey," she said, and went straight to him.
