Chapter 14: The Governor's Offer
The Governor's office was on ring one, behind three checkpoints and a door the colour of bone.
Four troopers walked me up the corridor, and not one of them touched me.
That was the Concord way, I was learning.
They never needed to.
Lucan Mordaunt stood at a long window with his hands behind his back.
Below him lay the summit hall, a white ring of seats the size of a stadium, empty and waiting.
"Pilot Quintana," he said, without turning. "Sit."
"I'll stand."
"As you like."
He turned.
He was exactly as he'd looked on every screen, spare and silver and unhurried, with a uniform so crisp it seemed to hold him up.
On the desk behind him stood a pot of tea and two cups.
He poured both, and set one on my side of the desk.
"You will want to know why a man in my position would invite a smuggler to tea," he said.
"I'm wondering how you knew my father's name."
"I read the file of everyone I buy from."
The cuff of my jacket was warm against my wrist.
