"I will take the fleet to ring one," Havrik said.
He was already pulling on his coat.
"You'll take nothing," I said. "The first Dar warship through that gate hands Mordaunt his war tonight."
"Then I walk in alone."
"You walk to the checkpoint and you're very large."
He stopped with one arm in a sleeve.
"Very large," he said.
"Ask for an audience. Loudly. In front of every trooper on the gate, with your hands where they can see them."
"That's a diversion."
"It's a diplomatic request," I said. "I'm going in the back."
Ysmae looked at the ceiling vents, and then at me, and one corner of her mouth lifted for the first time.
"The maintenance crawlspaces," she said. "No Dar can fit."
"No Dar can fit," I agreed. "I can."
Havrik took my face in both his hands.
They covered it entirely.
"You will not be taken," he said.
It wasn't an order.
It sounded like a man asking the universe.
"I have a ship that cannot lie to me," I said, and tapped my cuff. "Biscuit, we're going in."
"I have already begun to rearrange the door schedule of the entire ring," my ship said in my ear. "Please try not to touch anything with your face."
