Chapter 15: The Corridor

Gio's POV

I carried her out to the Charger in a quilt, with her face gray against my neck.

She did not argue about being carried.

That frightened me more than the cramp.

The emergency room at St. Luke's was nearly empty at one in the morning.

A nurse put her in a bed behind a curtain.

A doctor came, a young woman with her hair in a tie, and told me to wait outside.

"I'm staying," I said.

"Sir, I need to examine her."

"I'm staying."

"Gio," Raisa said from the bed.

Her voice was small.

"Go.

"Please.

"I'll shout if I need you."

I went.

I stood in the corridor under a humming light with my hands open at my sides, because I did not know what to do with them.

I had stood in a lot of rooms where people were afraid of me.

I had never stood in one where I was this afraid myself.

The curtain stayed closed for twenty minutes.

The doctor came out and drew it shut behind her.

"The baby is fine," she said.

My knees almost went, and I put a hand on the wall.

"The heartbeat is strong and the cramping has stopped," she said.

"Your fiancée's bloodwork shows a sedative.

"It is a heavy dose of a sleeping medication that should never be given to a pregnant woman."

I did not move.

"She took nothing," I said.
