Chapter 19: The Statement
Roark was waiting in the diner booth when I came back at midnight.
Poppy was asleep on the cushions beside him with her sneakers still on.
He had put his jacket over her and kept one hand on her back.
Rhona had driven me home.
She squeezed my shoulder at the door and said, "Do it properly," and went.
I locked up.
I took the pin out of my pocket and set it on the table between his cup and the sugar jar.
He turned his head toward the small click.
"What's that?"
"My lantern."
His fingers found it.
He turned it over, feeling the pierced door and the bent edge.
"It's yours," he said.
"It's mine. Gretchen gave it back."
"It sat on her collar for five years, and I never once asked to hold it."
"That's not an answer."
"No." He set it down. "What's the question?"
I sat across from him and folded my hands.
