Chapter 7: Blocked

"No," Clifford said. "She isn't."

"It isn't your decision, darling."

"She's my patient."

"She's nobody's patient here." Cynthia turned to the man with the badge. "Administrator."

The patient administrator cleared his throat.

"Dr. Wexley, technically, without an admitting attending."

"I'm admitting her."

"You're a fellow," Cynthia said. "You can't admit a cup of coffee without Dr. Merriman's signature. And Paul is at a conference in Chicago until Tuesday."

Clifford pulled the curtain all the way open.

The rings screeched along the rail.

The emergency room outside was bright and busy.

Two nurses at the desk stopped talking.

A resident with a tablet stopped walking.

"Then let's do this out here," Clifford said. "Where people can hear it."

Cynthia's mouth tightened, just a little.

"You're making a scene."

"You made one first. In a ballroom. With a spotlight."

"Sabrina made that," she said. "And she was upset, and I can hardly blame her. That woman walked into her engagement party."

Louise came back down the hall with a paper cup of water.

She saw Cynthia.

The cup crumpled in her hand.

"Oh, you've got some nerve," she said.

"Louise," I said from the bed.

Cynthia didn't even glance at her.

She kept her eyes on her son.

"You want to be a hero, Clifford. I understand. You always did. But you don't know who this girl is."

"I know exactly who she is."

"Then ask her," Cynthia said.
