Chapter 5: Three Men, One Garage

On Sunday at noon I parked behind Boone's garage and walked in without knocking.

The three of them were standing around a workbench with a thermos and a box of donuts, and every head came up at once.

Nobody had been talking, which meant they had been waiting.

Boone's shop smelled of cut pine and coffee.

He wore a flannel shirt with the sleeves pushed up, and he did not look like a man who had slept.

"Sit down," he said.

"I'll stand."

"Then stand." He put his hands flat on the bench. "We talked."

"I know. Dex told me."

"Dex tells everyone everything," said Emmett, and Dex looked pleased with himself.

Boone cleared his throat.

"Here's where we are," he said. "We're not going to fight over you. We're not going to put you in a position where you have to pick one of us to protect the others."

"That's very noble."

"It's not noble." His voice roughened. "It's the only way any of us gets to keep looking at Gil."

"And if I don't pick?"

The three of them went quiet.

Dex looked at Emmett, and Emmett looked at Boone, and Boone looked at me.

"Then you don't pick," Boone said. "It's yours to decide, not ours."

I looked from face to face.

I had known these men since I was in pigtails, and none of them had ever looked at me like this.
