Chapter 9: White Wolf

Brigid's POV

I did not wait for Kellan to tell me to stay behind.

I pulled his coat around me and walked out of the house on my own legs.

He had a hand ready under my elbow and did not use it.

The old ring yard stood behind the stables, a trampled circle of dirt with a stone post at one side.

They had hung a rope from the crossbeam of the old gallows frame.

Hester stood under it in her nightgown with her wrists tied in front of her and her glasses gone.

She was furious, and she had a black eye.

Twenty of Osric's men stood around the circle with their arms crossed.

Behind them, the pack had gathered and was watching in a silence that had no side yet.

"Charter justice," Osric called, when he saw us. "At noon, Alpha. Before the whole pack, as it was always done."

"Cut her down," Kellan said.

"I can't."

"I'm your Alpha."

"And I'm the Beta of the ring until the blood challenge is done." Osric spread his hands. "You gave me your word before the elders. Break it in front of the pack if you like."

Kellan started forward.

Four of the men stepped in front of him with their hands on their belts, where I knew they carried silver.

I heard the pack inhale.

If he fought, they would fight, and it would be Greyfen against Greyfen in the dust.

He knew it.

I felt him know it, through the thread in my shoulder, hot and helpless.

Hester caught my eye over the men's heads.

She did not say a word.

She only looked at me, steady and brown-eyed, and waited.

My wolf stirred under my ribs.

She was thin and slow, and fifteen years of starving had left her too weak to bite hard.

But I had her.

I had been bitten twice, and she had her head up.

"Kellan," I said. "Stand back."
