Chapter 15: The House

"I won't drink it," I said.

My mother kept the cup out in both hands.

"Of course you will, sweetheart. You've had a long walk."

"Willow bark and nightroot."

The cup did not shake, but her smile stopped.

"A sedative for wolves," I said. "Steeped bitter, every morning, since the night I was born."

"Who told you that?"

"A page with Dad's seal on it."

For a long time she looked at me, and I watched her decide not to lie.

Then she put the cup down on the white cloth, very gently.

"Come up to the house," she said. "You're cold. We'll talk like a family."

I went because Bea was in that house.

The kitchen was warm and smelled of bread, and my father was standing by the stove with his arms folded, looking at the floor.

He did not look at me.

"Where is she?" I asked.

"Upstairs, asleep," Mom said. "She sleeps nearly all day now."

"Then say it where I can hear it."

My mother folded her hands on the table.

"You were born with something in you, Cassandra. I felt it in the delivery room, before your sister came out. It was so bright that the midwife stepped back."

"Supreme."

"A Supreme in a family with an Alpha," she said, "is a knife in a drawer."

I stared at her.

"We took the oracle's reading at the spring that week," my father said, to the floor. "She said the Supreme would end the Alpha line and split the pack in two."

"So you split me instead."

"We shared you," my mother said, and her eyes were wet. "Don't use that word. Your sister got to be bright and loved and safe, and you got to be quiet and safe. Nobody hurt you. I made you tea every day with my own hands."
