Chapter 14: The Wife's Right
By six in the morning Ettore's cheek had swelled under the eye.
I held a bag of frozen peas against it in his mother's kitchen and neither of us mentioned the cemetery.
His skin was warm under the cold bag.
I kept my hand there longer than the bruise needed.
His phone buzzed on the oilcloth, and he read it with his free hand.
"The cousin," he said. "Mirella is at the club on Eighteenth Avenue. She's telling the capos I took the Donna by force and held her in a locked flat."
"They'll believe it?"
"Two of them will. Their wives adore her."
"Then I'll go home and say it to them myself."
"Dario will be there."
"I know."
"Carina."
"He hit you," I said. "He didn't hit me. I'd like to see what he does with me in the room."
Ettore did not like the idea, and he drove me there anyway.
He stopped at the gate and stayed behind the wheel with the engine running.
Agata's guard let me through without a word.
Dario sat at the kitchen table in last night's coat.
There was broken glass in the sink and a towel wrapped around his right hand.
He stood so fast the chair went over.
"You came back."
"For my coat," I said. "And to talk."
"Carina, I haven't slept. I've been thinking about what to give you."
"Sit down."
He sat.
I stayed on my feet at the end of the table.
"First, the men outside your door," I said. "Who do they work for?"
"Me."
"They walked out of the cemetery behind her."
His mouth worked.
