Chapter 17: Take the Ring

Nobody said a word while Dario crossed the room.

He walked down the whole length of the table past the eight men, and he did not look at one of them.

He stopped behind his own chair at the head of it and put his hands on the carved back.

"I'll answer whatever you ask," he said. "I won't lie. I've lied enough in this house."

The oldest capo cleared his throat.

"Did you go into that kitchen without the table's vote?"

"On my father's word. But I went in."

"Did you shoot a made man?"

"Yes."

"And his wife."

"Yes."

"You were twenty-one," the capo said. "Was there a reason you gave yourself?"

"I told myself he'd refused an order." Dario's voice was flat and tired. "Then I told myself a hundred other things for fifteen years. None of them held."

I had waited a long time to hear him say it without being forced.

It did not feel the way I thought it would.

The capo with the loud wife turned to Agata.

"Donna, the table has to vote."

"Then vote," she said.

They did it the old way, by laying a hand flat on the cloth for each question.

Was the Don's act without a vote a crime against the family?

Eight hands went down.

Should he keep the chair?

Not one hand moved.

Dario nodded once.

He pulled the gold signet ring off his finger.

It stuck at the knuckle, and he worked it free, and set it on the polished wood with a small click.
