The old man received them at the pond.
He stood on the stepping stones in his grey kimono with a paper cone of fish food in his hand.
The orange koi boiled up around his feet.
"Daughter," he said. "Son. How good of you to come so early."
He didn't turn around.
Tatsuya stood beside Shiori in a black suit, his back as straight as a post.
She had her badge in her handbag and a pair of flat shoes on her feet, and she had not slept.
"There is a thing the family does when an heir is ready," said Genichiro, and dropped a pinch of food on the water. "We drink the cup together. Father and son. Before all the chiefs. It makes the son the father's own, and the family's own, forever."
"The sakazuki," said Tatsuya.
"In three days. At the main hall. Every branch chief will be there, and so will the head of the Sumiyoshi alliance, and so will you, daughter, in a kimono, at your husband's side."
