Chapter 22: The Gate
The gate of the detention center at Fuchu was grey steel, three meters high, set in a grey concrete wall.
It opened at nine in the morning with a rattle that Shiori felt in her teeth.
She had been standing in front of it since six.
It was the first week of September, and the heat had not broken yet.
She wore a plain cotton dress and flat shoes, and her hair was down, because she'd once heard him say that he preferred it.
A man in a paper-thin shirt came out through the small door cut into the larger one.
He carried a clear plastic bag.
It held a toothbrush, a notebook, a rubber band, and one folded envelope.
He was a great deal thinner.
His hair had been cut very short, so that the scar through his eyebrow stood out white against his skin.
His shoulders, which had once blocked out the light, were merely broad.
He stopped on the pavement.
Nobody had come to meet him in a convoy of black sedans.
There were no bowing men, and no cars, and no father.
There was a small woman in a cotton dress, and, a little way off, a heavy bald figure in a delivery company's green polo shirt, leaning against a white van with his arms crossed.
