The Wall stayed on after he said it.
He didn't say good night, and he didn't give us a rule.
He just looked down at the six of us in our line on the carpet.
One cleared his throat first.
"Mr. Langan," he said. "Garson. I'm sorry for your loss."
Garson Langan looked at him for a long moment, and then the Wall went black.
Five sat down on the carpet right where she'd been standing.
Eighteen went upstairs, and this time Three went up after her.
Nick stood at the bottom of the stairs with his back to me and stared at the dark Wall.
I stayed where I was.
I'd watched him touch that bracelet before every rule for five days.
I had never once asked myself whose it was.
At seven the next morning, the phone in the booth started ringing.
It rang and rang, until all six of us were out on the balcony listening to it.
I went down the stairs and looked through the booth door.
