Chapter 18: The Lifeguard Chair
I looked at that towel for a long time before I stepped out of the elevator.
The pool room was warm and smelled of chlorine.
Somebody had cleaned the water until it was as clear as air, and the lights under it made it glow.
The lap pool ran the length of the room, four feet deep at our end and nine at the other.
The lifeguard chair stood at the deep end, white, with a little ladder up the back.
A screen hung on the wall above it, and Garson Langan smiled down from it.
"The bell rings for three minutes," he said. "I'll count down the end for you."
He touched his bracelet.
"Into the water, house."
The water was warm as a bath.
Eighteen went in up to her chest at the shallow end and held on to the edge with both hands.
"I can't really swim," she said. "Like, at all."
"You don't have to swim," Nick said. "You have to duck. I'll be right here."
