Chapter 22: Written Out
The bell rang on over the showroom, and the microphones on the stage carried every word over it.
Garson Langan turned to me with his famous smile.
"Ask, Fourteen," he said.
I didn't look at him.
I looked at the red light over the cameras that said LIVE.
"What does written out mean?" I asked.
The smile stayed on his face.
His hand went to the bracelet, and stayed there a long time.
He had never lied once in ten days, and every person in that room knew it.
"It means your heart stops," Garson Langan said.
Somebody in the balcony laughed, because they thought it was a line.
Then nobody laughed.
Forty's mother stood up in the front row with her pizza box sign.
"Where is my son?" she screamed at the stage. "Where is my son?"
I walked to the edge of the stage, right above her.
"He died on the carpet on the first morning," I said. "A paramedic checked him. I was sitting next to him."
