Chapter 12: Two Lines

I took three tests on Monday morning, in the downstairs bathroom, with the door locked and the faucet running.

I had bought them at the drugstore on Lake Street on the way home from the clinic.

The pharmacist had rung them up without looking at me, and I had walked out to my car with my hands shaking.

Now I sat on the edge of the tub in my bathrobe and set all three on the sink in a row.

I did not look at them.

I washed my hands.

I dried them.

I looked at the tile.

The box said to wait three minutes.

I waited the full three minutes.

Then I stood up and turned around.

The first test had two pink lines.

So did the second.

So did the third.

I put my hand flat over my mouth and slid down the wall until I sat on the cold floor.

My period had been eleven days late.
