Chapter 19: Dale's POV

Dale's POV

The tavern two blocks from the club has a back room with a pool table, a dead jukebox, and a door that locks.

I have known about the lock for fifteen years.

I had never used it until Saturday.

The draw ended at nine.

Leif bought the first round and then the second.

By ten he was at the front bar teaching Nils a card trick that did not work.

Gunnar sat beside them with a ginger ale and a face I had not seen on him since before the wedding.

Britt looked at me across the room and tilted her head toward the back.

I finished my beer.

I took my time, because she likes to watch me take it.

The back room smelled of chalk and old smoke.

The green felt on the table was worn pale at the corners, and one lamp hung low over it.

I locked the door behind me.

She was already leaning against the rail with her arms crossed under her breasts.

She wore a grin I had learned to be careful of.

"You took Leif's present," she said.

"I did."

"You have it on you."

I took the purple bullet out of my coat pocket and set it on the table.

It rolled slowly across the felt and stopped against the black ball.

"Take your jeans off, Britt," I said.

She did, in no hurry.
