Chapter 21: Four Ties
On the morning of the banquet I drove to the cemetery alone.
It sat on a hillside off Central Avenue, with the snow packed hard along the rows and the sky low and gray.
Gunnar had asked to come.
I had said, "Wait at the gate," and he had kissed my forehead and let me go.
He was standing at the iron gate now with his hands in his coat pockets and his breath smoking.
I walked up the hill.
Annika's stone was new, gray granite, with the name cut deep.
ANNIKA BAKKEN THORSRUD.
Beneath the dates, my mother had chosen the line.
OUR ANGEL.
I stood in front of it with my gloves in my pocket and my hands bare in the cold.
I had come here three times since the funeral.
Every time, I had said nothing.
"Hi," I said.
