Chapter 10: Donal's Shoes

I hit my brother with a hug so hard that the gym bag fell off his shoulder.

"Ow," said Donal, laughing. "Ro. Ow. My ribs."

"Your ribs. Oh my God. Your face."

"It looks worse than it is."

I held his face in both hands under the streetlight.

His lip was split and swollen, and there was a yellowing bruise along his jaw.

He was twenty, six feet of blond, with our mother's easy grin and a gold chain at his neck, and he was alive.

I started to cry and couldn't stop.

Tadhg took the gym bag without a word and carried it up.

Donal sat in the funeral home kitchen with a mug of tea going cold in both hands, and I made him eggs.
