Chapter 19: The Old Man's Word
The elder's house on Monument Avenue had a porch light on and a dead man on the boards under it.
He was young.
He had been one of the coffin bearers, I thought, with a good black coat and a slit throat.
The elder's grandson was kneeling beside him with his hands over his face.
The elder himself stood in the kitchen doorway with his cane planted and his hat on.
He wasn't crying.
His hand on the cane had gone white to the wrist.
"They came through the back," he said. "Four of them. Con was awake and watching the door the whole time, and he never made a sound. He couldn't."
Mal stood in the old boss's empty room, looking at the dent in the pillow.
He didn't touch anything.
I saw his shoulders go.
I put my hand flat on his back, between the blades, and the muscle there was rigid.
