Chapter 24: Sold to the Wolf
The old assay hall at Dry Fork was full again, and this time nobody stank of fear.
Three hundred wolves sat on folding chairs in the half dark, with snow melting off their boots.
The outer packs had come, and the elders in the front row, and the five councillors who were left, sitting very straight.
Dorrie had brought a thermos and a rug, and Garth stood on the plank block with a gavel.
"Lot one," Garth called, and his big voice cracked a little. "Last lot of the day, and the last lot of the market."
"One rogue tracker, twenty-five. No chain, no papers, no price on his head."
A ripple of laughter ran down the room.
Kit stepped up onto the block.
He wore a clean grey henley and his canvas jacket, and the ring of the old scar at his throat stood out pale above the collar.
Over it, on the nape, the king's bite had healed into a dark crescent.
Nothing was on his wrists.
He looked at the hall, and it looked back, and he found that he was not afraid of a single face.
"Who'll open?" Garth said. "Do I hear ten?"
Nobody spoke.
A woman by the stove lifted two fingers, grinning.
