Chapter 21: The Log
Freya was already on her feet.
She came up the aisle between the long tables with a flat brown envelope held in both hands.
She wore her knit cap and her rescue-squad fleece over a borrowed skirt, and two hundred people watched her do it.
"It's mine to read, sir," she said to the officer.
"I'm the one who asked for it."
"Miss," the officer said.
"The old harbour master gave it to us this morning," Freya said.
"On Lopez.
"He said to put it in your hand in front of the room, and that's what I'm doing."
The dean had not sat down.
She stood with her palms on the cloth and her ring beside her plate.
I watched her look at the envelope the way my father looks at a net with a tear in it.
"That is an unauthorized document," she said.
"It's a page from the harbour log, ma'am," Freya said.
"It's got the date on it."
She slid the sheet out.
It was thin blue-ruled paper, creased once down the middle, and her hand was steady.
I had known she would be steady.
I had never known she would be this loud.
"The harbour log for the fourteenth of November," Freya read.
Her voice rang off the beams.
"Wind south-east, gale, forty knots.
"Visibility poor.
"At twenty-one ten, vessel Skua, sixty-foot workboat, owned by Aasen Marine, outbound from the Kestrel Narrows landing.
"At twenty-one forty, vessel Skua, returning, running without lights."
A sound went through the hall, small and low.
"At twenty-one forty-five," Freya read, "one orca-kin, unresponsive, recovered from the channel by Skua's crew.
"Pronounced at the landing at twenty-two ten."
She lowered the page.
Nobody in the hall moved.
"The harbour master's nephew wrote that night, from the hut window, in his own hand," Freya said.
