Chapter 5: The Corner of the Whorl

Elias's POV

The corner of the mark was black, and it was the size of a thumbnail.

I had seen it on the cave floor, in the white light of my headlamp, for the length of a breath.

The strap had slipped when she braced her hand against the rock.

Under the brown leather, on the thin skin of her inner wrist, there was an edge of dark whorl.

It ended in a hook like a gull's wing.

I knew that whorl.

I had seen it on my own family's wrists since I was a child.

My brother Halvard had worn it on his left arm since the summer he first swam with our mother's sister.

It was our clan's pattern, drawn in black from the inside out.

I had never seen it on any wrist but a Reinholt's.

I stood in the empty lecture hall at nine at night with one lamp lit and my brother's council ring in my fist.

I wore it on a chain beneath my shirt and had never put it on my finger.

It was heavy and plain and warm from my skin, with a flat black stone cut with the seal of the tide council.

It had come to me in a cardboard box with his watch and his reading glasses, six months after the funeral.

Halvard had been thirty-four.

He had died last November in a boat strike in the channel, in the dark, in a gale.

The dean had called it an accident.
