Chapter 8: The Loft

The boathouse was dark when I got there, and the rain had stopped.

I climbed the outside stair in my father's boots with a flashlight in one hand and a wool blanket from my bed over my arm.

At the top of the stair is the loft door.

I unlocked it with the key I had never given back, and went in, and lit the old kerosene lamp that hung from the beam.

It threw a warm yellow light on the crab pots and the coiled line and the heap of canvas in the corner.

Through the window I could see the whole dark channel, and the lights of the mainland winking across it.

I spread the blanket on the sails.

I took off my watch strap, and then I put it on again, and then I left it on.

I sat down on the blanket with my knees drawn up, and waited.

He came at ten exactly.

I heard his boots on the stair, slow and even, and the door opened.

He stood in the frame in his charcoal shell with the rain on his shoulders, and looked at me, and at the lamp, and at the blanket.

He did not speak.

"Close it," I said.

He closed it.

"Lock it."

The bolt slid home.

"Take off your coat."

He took off the coat and hung it on a nail.

Under it he wore a dark sweater and old jeans, and I looked at the line of his shoulders and the way his hands hung at his sides.

I stood up.

I walked to him across the boards and took hold of the front of his sweater, and I felt him breathe in.

"I'm going to start," I said.

"Yes."

"And you are not going to touch me until I tell you."

His throat moved.

"Yes," he said.

"Say it."

"I will not touch you until you tell me," he said.

I lifted the sweater and he raised his arms, and I pulled it off over his head and dropped it on the boards.

His chest was broad and pale in the lamplight, with dark hair across it going silver at the center.
