The skiff came in alongside the white boat so smoothly that nobody heard the engine.
The bearded lobsterman stood up in the stern with a gaff in his hand.
"Morning," he said.
"This is private," Bryce said.
"It's tidal water. Everything below that rock is public." The bearded man didn't smile. "You'll want to leave."
"I was just going."
"You were."
Bryce looked at the gaff, and at the second man, and at his own groomsmen.
He put his sunglasses back on.
"Think about it, Gen," he said, as he stepped down into his boat. "I'd want to know."
The center-console backed out and went whining up the cove.
The skiff held its place until it was out of sight.
Then the bearded man nodded to me, once, and turned his boat around.
I stood on the dock in Ansel's shirt with my arms tight across my chest.
He didn't touch me.
"Is it true?" I said.
"Yes."
"You get a check from Pettengill Marine."
