Chapter 28: Rummy at Fern's

Fern's wife dealt the cards with a snap.

"Gin rummy," she said. "Two cents a point. No crying."

"I don't cry at cards," I said.

"You cried at the sink."

"That was the onions," I said.

"We have no onions."

Fern, across the kitchen table, put down his pipe and laughed so hard his mustache shook.

I had been in their house for two days.

I had slept in their spare room under a quilt with a rooster on it.

I had eaten four meals a day and cleaned the entire kitchen twice.

Fern's wife had said nothing except, Eat.

It was Sunday evening, and the window over the sink was gold.

Fern drew a card and glared at it.

"You are cheating," he said to his wife.

"I am winning. It is different."

"She cheated in 1979," Fern told me. "At the church supper. She marked the deck with a little pin."

"It was a sewing needle," his wife said calmly. "And you were losing the pie money."

I laughed too, loud and helpless, and for a few minutes I stopped thinking about a drawer full of stubs.
