Chapter 31: Snow on the Skylight

The first snow came on the ninth of November, at night, without a sound.

I lay on my back in the loft and watched it gather on the skylight.

Each flake landed, held a moment, and went to water against the warm glass.

Below me, the stove ticked, and I heard Ansel on the ladder.

He came up slowly, with a mug in each hand and snow melting in his hair.

"It's sticking," he said.

"I saw."

"The roof will hold. Fern's shakes are good," he said.

"You're talking about the roof."

"I'm nervous," he said, and handed me a mug.

I laughed, because it was true.

It had been three and a half months since the yard, since the night in the shed with his draft on the cradle between us.

He had come to the Point every evening of them, and he had fixed my gutters and my woodpile and the leak over the stovepipe.

He had never once put a hand on me that he didn't ask for first.

He had asked for my hand to cross the ice at the slip.

He had asked for my hair, once, to lift it off my neck in the heat of the shed.

He had never asked for more.

And he had never gone home before ten.

I set the mug on the beam above the bed, over the pencil marks.

"Ansel," I said.

"Yes."

"I said not yet. In July."

His face went still in the lamplight.
