The last ferry left Tern Island at six, loaded to the rail with people in good shoes.
Fern waved from the stern with his carnation behind his ear.
His wife waved too, from under the hat, and the bakery woman was still crying.
A lobsterman's son had climbed onto the roof of the wheelhouse to throw rice.
I stood on the dock in my linen dress with grains of it in my hair and watched them go.
The horn sounded twice.
The ferry slid out past the cliff and into a bank of fog that had come in off the open water.
One by one the voices faded into gray.
"They'll be at the Legion by seven," Ansel said beside me. "Fern has the band."
"Fern has the keg."
"Fern has everything," Ansel said.
"He's earned it."
The dock was quiet then, and the chapel stood white on the headland behind us with its door open to the wind.
