Chapter 6: Everyone Signs

Constance got out of the Lincoln herself, which I hadn't expected.

She stood in my father's yard in pearl-gray linen and low heels, looking at the weeds.

"Genevieve, dear," she said. "What a morning you've had."

"You put a lock on my door."

"The company did. A precaution, after the wedding. We were afraid for the building." She smiled. "You can see it's all right."

"I cut it off."

"So I see."

She did not seem angry, and that frightened me more than anger would have.

She walked up the path and stopped at the foot of the porch steps, three feet below me, and looked up.

"I'd like to apologize for yesterday," she said.

I waited.

"Bryce is young, and he is nervous. The deed was a foolish idea of his. He wanted to surprise you with a fresh start." Her voice was soft. "It was a nerves matter, dear. Nothing more."

"It was a deed under the signing page."

"It was a poor joke," she said.

"You said, 'Be kind to her. Only until Tuesday.'"

Her smile didn't move.

"Did I?" she said. "I say so many things."

"I have a witness," I said. "Two hundred of them."

"Two hundred friends of the family who will remember a very emotional morning." She tilted her head. "Let's not make this ugly. I have an offer."

She took an envelope from her handbag and held it out.

I didn't take it.

"Three hundred thousand dollars," she said. "For seven-tenths of an acre and a shed. Cash, closing in a week, and a letter from my lawyer saying nothing happened on Saturday."

"The Point is not for sale."

"Three hundred thousand dollars is more than your father earned in his last five years combined."
