Chapter 12: The Ledger

I didn't go home.

I took the train to Birchwood with Eli's phone still recording in my pocket.

I walked straight into the director's office without knocking.

She was at her desk, eating a yogurt.

She put the spoon down.

"Ms. Doyle."

"I need to see the fund's invoices for my father."

"I'm sorry?"

"The paperwork. Whatever the Garvey fund sends you each month. I need to know what they've paid and when."

She went still.

I had never seen her anything but kind, in a coat, on her way out.

Now she looked like a woman who had been waiting two years for a knock on the door.

"Please sit," she said.

I stayed standing.

"Gordon Garvey just told me the fund ends on Friday. He says he can pull my father's bed. Before I decide whether to leave my whole life, I want to see the numbers."

"Ms. Doyle."

"Please."

She looked at the door.

She got up, and shut it, and went to a gray filing cabinet behind her desk and pulled a green folder.

She laid it on the blotter and opened it to a ledger sheet.

Twenty-four rows, each with a date and a dollar amount.

"The Garvey Development retirees' fund," she said carefully, "paid the first three months of your father's care, in full."

I read the first three rows.

They were stamped paid, in a firm's name, with a Garvey Development account number.
