Chapter 29: The Night Desk

The night desk at Gulf Coast Towing hadn't changed.

It was a gray room with a bank of radios, a coffee maker with a burned ring.

A window onto the yard, where eleven flatbeds sat nose to tail under sodium lights.

I stood in the doorway on Saturday morning in my good coat.

I had driven four hours to say yes.

I knew what I was going to say.

"There she is," my old boss said. He was a heavy man in a Saints cap with his boots on the desk. "The prodigal dispatcher."

"Hi, boss."

"Sit. Coffee?"

"No, thank you," I said.

He took his boots down and looked at me.

"Twenty thousand more," my boss said. "Day shift. A desk of your own with a door. I need a person in it who knows the difference between a flat tire and a woman in labor."

"I know the difference."

"That's why it's you."

I sat in the chair in front of his desk, the same one where I had signed my first week's cash receipt, pregnant to the chin.
