Chapter 31: Tin Roof

Mémère had listened to every word from behind the screen door, in her robe, leaning on the Contraption.

"Go," she said. "Take the child, take the dog, and shut my door behind you."

"Mémère."

"I've got a bell and a neighbor. Go home."

We drove through the rain to Crowley with Lou asleep in the back seat and Beignet snoring in her lap.

Gabe carried her inside and tucked her into the green room.

When he came back down the hall, I was standing in the bedroom doorway with my coat on.

The rain beat on the tin roof over the porch, hard and steady.

The lamp was lit.

My grandmother's wedding quilt lay folded at the foot of the bed.

"Come here," I said.

He crossed the room.

I took his face in my hands and looked at it, the gray at the temples, the dark eyebrows, the line between the eyes that had deepened these five years.

"I want to do this slowly," I said. "I want to do all of it."

"Anything."

"Don't talk. Not yet."

I undressed him.
