Chapter 13: Bring Me a Witness
I went to Cesare's apartment alone on Wednesday morning, with Ettore parked at the curb and the engine running.
"Fifteen minutes," I said. "Then you come up."
"Ten."
"Ettore."
"Ten, Gianna, or I come up the stairs with the doorman's keys."
I took the ten.
The doorman looked at his shoes and let me in, and I rode the elevator to a floor I had lived on for three years.
I still had my key.
Cesare was in the kitchen in his shirtsleeves, making coffee in the machine I had picked out and he had never learned to clean.
He did not look surprised.
"You came for your things," he said.
"I came to hear you say it."
"Say what?"
"Understood, Papa."
His hand stopped on the carafe.
It was only a moment, but I saw it, because I had watched that hand for three years and knew every small thing it did when he was lying.
"Who told you that?"
"Someone who was standing in the hall on Park Avenue."
"Ettore." He laughed and poured. "The driver. He's been in love with you since you were in braces, Gianna, everyone on the docks knows it. He'd say the sky was green if it got him into your bed."
"I'm not asking about his bed."
"No, but you're in it, aren't you?"
He turned around and leaned on the counter, and he was smiling the easy smile that he used on the councilmen.
"I have a photograph," he said. "You, going up his stairs at midnight on Saturday. Rather a nice one. My father's friend at the Post would run it Sunday morning, if I asked."
